Finger Lakes Daily News is growing its newsroom. We’re looking for a journalist who lives for the local story — someone who can cover breaking news, government meetings, schools, courts, and the people and places that make the Finger Lakes what it is. You’ll report, write, and publish daily across our digital platform and seven radio stations, turning what’s happening in our communities into clear, accurate, trustworthy coverage that readers and listeners count on. If you’re curious, fast, and care about getting it right, you’ll have a real audience and real impact from day one.

What You'll Do

  • Report and write original local news daily — breaking news, government, schools, courts, business, and community events
  • Develop sources and build relationships across the Finger Lakes region
  • Cover meetings, press conferences, and live events, often on deadline
  • Shoot photos and video to accompany stories
  • Write clear, accurate, engaging copy optimized for web and search
  • Adapt stories for broadcast across our radio stations
  • Pitch story ideas and own beats from idea to publication
  • Use AI and digital tools to work faster without sacrificing accuracy
  • Engage with the audience across social media

What We're Looking For

  • Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills
  • A nose for news and a commitment to accuracy and fairness
  • Ability to juggle multiple stories and hit deadlines
  • Comfortable with digital publishing (WordPress a plus) and social media
  • Basic photo and video skills, or a willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of or genuine interest in the Finger Lakes region
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to cover events across the region
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends for breaking news
  • Degree in journalism, communications, or a related field — or equivalent real-world experience
  • Both early-career and experienced journalists are encouraged to apply
